Elayne Chan recently graduated from the Auckland University of Technology with a Bachelors in Graphic Design, majoring in Pictorial Studies. She is now working as a freelance illustrator in Auckland. She loves to read and write and has a passion for telling stories through drawing and bringing lovable characters to life.
Elayne's goal is to work in the animation industry and be part of making unforgettable movie characters as a character designer and animator. Elayne is the illustrator of Nana's Voluminous Bloomers. “I have always loved drawing since was young, and it wasn’t until AUT, in the midst of studying Graphic Design, did I realise that I had a great interest in telling stories through my artwork. It was looking at other illustrators and being introduced to using different mediums that my affinity for art became less of a hobby and more of a passion.”
Elayne says part of the inspiration for her drawings Bloomers came from watching children’s television shows and bringing that kind of “appealing/cartoony style” into the children’s book. “Most of it, however, came from just thinking back to my childhood and how I used to play with my grandmother’s things when I was bored. Those memories helped me figure out how to portray the children’s emotions in the story.” This is Elayne’s first foray into book illustration, and she is excited about having children react and respond to her artwork. “Kids in general respond strongly to pictures, and they are very honest when it comes to things they like and things they don’t. So if all goes well and they enjoy my art and the cheeky, yet sweet story, of Nana’s Voluminous Bloomers, I’ll be over the moon!
