Shirley O'Curly is also available for sale in Wanganui from Paige's Book Gallery and the Whanganui Regional Museum: $20 RRP.
Shirley' O'Curly is a baa-aa-ad sheep who gets up to all sorts of tricks to avoid being shorn ... All the farm animals try to entice her into the shearing shed, but Shirley O'Curly stubbornly refuses to listen to them. Poor Farmer Jim is at his wit’s end ... Then he has a plan, and Shirley soon learns that trying something new is not as bad as she thought it would be. Author Heather Sinclair says the philosophy behind the work is that often what we dread is not nearly as bad in reality as it is in our imaginations. ‘Just think of the child who screams at the thought of their first haircut,’ Heather says. ‘Then they sit in the chair and the barber or hairdresser is kind and gentle and they find the experience nothing like the torture they had anticipated. What is more, they often like the end result, which is just what happens to Shirley.’ Shirley O’Curly is delightfully illustrated in pastel tones by Jessica Kidd.
